I have worked in the field of supporting adults with disabilities for more than 15 years. It never fails to amaze me that our government is constantly underfunding or cutting back these services. Even during times of economic surpluses our government does not fund for those in need. For example, during the previous few years when Alberta was on top of the world due to the increasing price of oil the increases given to these services was less than half of what was needed. Do I even need to point out the 34% increase The governing officials voted for themselves? In preparation for Feb 9 2010, when i suspect that the Alberta Government will announce cutbacks to services for adults with disabilities I would like to leave you with the following statements made by Minister Jablonski: “I want to reassure Albertans with developmental disabilities and their families that they are and will remain a high priority for me and this government. I am saddened that some are making these individuals and others across the province worried about possible changes to the supports provided by the PDD program. The health and safety of those supported by the PDD program has remained paramount—even while we looked for savings. It is important to find savings and efficiencies where we can, including to help sustain programs like PDD over the longer term, but it won’t be done at the cost of health and safety.
