People with disabilities and seniors
There are 17,000 people who work in community disability services with close to 50% earning less than $30,000/year.
What happens when there's no one there to care?
An increasing human resources crisis is leaving our most vulnerable citizens without proper assistance. Organizations – such as women's shelters, services for children and adults with disabilities, crisis centers and counseling services – are meant to provide caring, attentive and unique support. Their work plays a vital role in the provincial government's plan to "improve Albertans' quality of life, and provide safe and secure communities."
Cuts will make the system worse
Yet the reality is that for human service organizations, the already stressed system is in danger as the government plans deep cuts. These cuts are even having an impact this year, and the situation will only worsen if they cut deeply in next year’s budget.
While demand for services continues to grow, organizations can not attract and retain the necessary staff to maintain quality services for the many Albertans in need. As the primary funder, the Alberta government does not provide adequate dollars to pay staff competitive wages.
These services affect all Albertans
The work of community human services helps people in crisis, with developmental disabilities, or from marginalized backgrounds to experience the joy and fulfillment of being a valued and respected member of their schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods. Without this support, we will see increasing demands on other sectors, like healthcare and mental health services. Our communities are strongest when we can support those most in need to be active and healthy citizens in our society.
You can help by joining Albertans Who Care and sending a message to the government.
